Cognition

Here you'll find all the research on cognition carried out at CNRS Humanities & Social Sciences and its laboratories.

Research into cognition focuses on the mental representations and processes involved in the human capacity to speak (through oral or signed languages), perceive, think and interact with our environment (motor skills, verbal and non-verbal communication, etc.) and with other agents (human or not) along with how these abilities can evolve over time. This research involves a wide range of disciplines including the sciences of language, philosophy, evolutionary psychology, the psychology of cognition, the development of cognitive abilities and individual disorders, ergonomics and comparative cognition. This is a fundamental and dynamic field for the InSHS and is mainly supported by language science and/or philosophy laboratories that sometimes work in a multidisciplinary manner. Cognition research is also developed in laboratories working in an interface situation with the Institute of Biological Sciences. Cognition is also an important emerging area of interaction with disciplines associated with AI and automatic language processing. The formal rigour of cognition research and the experimental methodologies developed within the field have led it to gradually integrate research into individual and collective decisions carried out by economics and sociology research teams.
